Steve Leach: Music

Brooks Avenue

BROOKS AVENUE

Riding the rail to the south side of town
North, I get dizzy & have to come down
Crossing the river, I heave a big sigh
Watching the ragged old neighborhood buildings
go by

Rolling past the patterns of diamonds & lines
Blue-green & orange repeating designs
Colorful houses with junk in the yards
And people who aren’t all the same
As the people we are

How’d I wind up with you
Here on Brooks Avenue?
Somehow I knew that I would
I’ll always stay with you
Here on Brooks Avenue
We belong in this broken-down neighborhood

Cracks in the sidewalk & holes in the street
Music through curtains that sway to the beat
We stop to acknowledge a neighbor’s remark
Then walk past the dogs that hang out at the park
I hold your hand as a siren recedes in the dark

How’d I wind up with you
Here on Brooks Avenue?
Somehow I knew that I would
I’ll always stay with you
Here on Brooks Avenue
We belong in this broken-down neighborhood
