I'm a chocolate lover. One of my favorite candy bars is Mounds. Not too long ago, the company that makes Mounds did something that made me very happy… they put four candies in one package. I guess they realized that the best things come four at a time. Okay it's a stretch, but the four part harmony of the Bob Monk Singers is as soothing and pleasing as that Mound four-pack. At times, the Singers work in major harmonies, and you'll hear the minors and diminishings as well. Ah, but when they hit that 'barber-shop' chord, it brings a smile that nothing else can. Sometimes the group just wows you with their movement of 'oohs' and 'ahs' over nicely arranged accompaniment. Solos are traded among the group but each song always finds them churning out an amazingly tight quad-ra-sonic performance. The Bob Monk Singers aren't exactly like other quartets I've heard. A refreshing use of writing, arrangement, and instrumentation make this album exceptionally entertaining. This group is less than a year old and they've managed to release a cutting-edge album that redefines an entire genre within Texas music. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next project. I'm not up on all my instruments, but I would have sworn I heard someone banging a pot with a spoon during "The Fun We Never Had." Perhaps it was the pot used to melt the chocolate of this sweet project.
